National High School Rules
The official rules of AAU Baseball are the National Federation of State High School Associations except where modified by the following: (Please note: NCAAU Baseball Rules take precedent over High School Federation)
- Pitching
9u: A player may pitch in a cumulative maximum of six (6) innings in consecutive calendar days after which that player must not pitch the next calendar day.
10u: A player may pitch in a cumulative maximum of seven (7) innings in consecutive calendar days after which that player must not pitch the next calendar day.
11u: A player may pitch in a cumulative maximum of eight (8) innings in consecutive calendar days after which that player must not pitch the next calendar day.
12u: A player may pitch in a cumulative maximum of nine (9) innings in consecutive calendar days after which that player must not pitch the next calendar day.
13u, 14u, 15u and 16u: A player may pitch in a cumulative maximum of ten (10) innings in consecutive calendar days after which that player may not pitch the next calendar day.
Example 1: 6 innings- Day 1 (2 innings), Day 2 (2 innings), Day 3 (1 inning), Day 4 (1 inning) = 6 innings in consecutive calendar days, therefore, Day 5 (must not pitch).
Example 2: 6 innings- Day 1 (3 innings), Day 2 (does not pitch, so innings reset), Day 3 (3 innings) Day 4 (3 innings) = 6 innings in consecutive calendar days, therefore, Day 5 (must not pitch)
13u, 14u, 15u, 16u: A player may pitch in a cumulative maximum of ten (10) innings in consecutive calendar days after which that player must not pitch the next calendar day.
Example: Day 1 (4 innings), Day 2 (4innings), Day 3 (does not pitch so innings reset) Day 4 (return to full pitching eligibility).
17u and 18/19u: No restrictions on number of innings pitched.
An "inning pitched" constitutes a pitcher being officially entered into the pitching position. The pitcher will then be charged with pitching that inning even if that pitcher does not throw a pitch.
Upon reaching the applicable individual pitching limit, the pitcher is immediately removed as pitcher.
EXCEPTION: When a game is suspended in mid-inning and continued on a future day, the pitcher of record is charged with an inning pitched just prior to suspension and also charged with an inning pitched immediately upon resumption of the game.
PENALTY: Upon discovery that the individual pitching limit has been exceeded, the pitcher is immediately removed and both the pitcher and head coach are ejected. - BALKS: In the 8u, 9u, 10u (closed base only), balks will not be called.
- HEAD FIRST SLIDE: Headfirst slides will be allowed in all age groups.
- BAT SIZE: The 8u through 14u age groups shall not be limited by the High Schoo Rules published by the National Federation of State High Schools (NFHS) regarding bat specifications.
- 10-RUN RULE / 15-RUN RULE (MANDATORY):
- 9u – 12u: The 10-run shall apply after four (4) innings (3 ½ innings if the home team is ahead.) The 8-run shall apply after five (5) innings (4 ½ innings if the home team is ahead.)
- 13u – 18/19U: The 10-run shall apply after five (5) innings (4 ½ innings if the home team is ahead.) The 8-run shall apply after (6) innings (5 ½ innings if the home team is ahead.)
- In all age groups, the 15-rule shall apply after three (3) innings (2 ½ innings if the home team is ahead.)
- The 10-run rule and 15-run rule shall apply in all National Championship games in pool play, bracket, and metal games.
- AGE DETERMINATION: Age cutoff date is May 1st. See Below Examples:
8u - Cannot turn 9 prior to May 1, 2010
9u - Cannot turn 10 prior to May 1, 2010
10u - Cannot turn 11 prior to May 1, 2010
11u - Cannot turn 12 prior to May 1, 2010
12u - Cannot turn 13 prior to May 1, 2010
13u - Cannot turn 14 prior to May 1, 2010
14u - Cannot turn 15 prior to May 1, 2010 - TRIPS TO THE MOUND: A second trip to the mound to the same pitcher in the same inning causes the pitchers automatic removal from the mound (not the game).
- HOME TEAM: Home team will be decided by a coin flip between the two teams for each pool play game. For bracket play games, the highest seed is the home team, except the championship game and "If" game, which a coin flip may determine the home team.
- ROSTER BATTING: If a team chooses to roster bat, then all players other than the nine (9) defensive position players are extra hitters and can move freely in defensive positions. The rule is not mandatory and is left up to each individual team. If all roster players bat, then there will be no subs and an injury or sickness will be an out the 1st time up to bat. Teams will receive only one (1) OUT for the injured or sick player. However, the injured or sick player may not return to the game. You may use the last OUT MADE to be the courtesy runner. If a team falls below 9 players then it will be an automatic OUT each time at bat. If you are batting the normal amount of players with subs, then the subs or burnt subs are eligible to be the courtesy runner.
- . THE EXTRA PLAYER (EP) AND/OR THE DESIGNATED HITTER (DH) IS AS FOLLOWS: The Extra Player is like a rover and can go into any position on the field and will not be counted as a substitute and cannot change in the batting order. Therefore you may: (1) Use neither play straight nine (2) Use EP and Bat Ten (3) Use DH bat nine playing ten (4) Use EP and DH Bat ten play eleven.
Please note: You must finish with the same number (batting order) that you started the game with. - . NUMBER OF PLAYERS TO START A GAME: Teams can play an official game with only eight (8) players. An out is declared for the ninth (9th) position in the batting lineup at each turn at bat until the ninth (9th) player arrives, which would then be put in the ninth (9th) spot of the batting order. Any number less than eight (8) and the game will be declared a suspended game and is not rescheduled. The suspended game is then ruled a forfeit by the tournament director.
- . INTERNATIONAL TIE BREAKER RULE: Will be used for all games until the Championship Game. At the end of regulation innings or when time has expired, place the last out made of the previous inning at second (2nd) base with no outs. Each team will bat until a winner is decided.
- . BRACKET PLAY SEEDING: (A) Overall win-loss record (B) Head-to-head competition, provided all teams have played each other (C) Least number of runs allowed in total pool play (D) Most runs scored in total pool play (E) Random draw
